Ocean plastics reduction


Global urgency
Every year, 400 million tonnes of plastic waste are produced, up to 199 million tonnes of which pollute the oceans. There are two main sources:
- Land-based waste, from run-off, sewage, rubbish, industry and illegal dumps.
- Marine waste, from fishing, boating and aquaculture, including ‘ghost fishing’ due to abandoned nets.
If left unchecked, plastic pollution of aquatic ecosystems could triple by 2040 to 37 million tonnes a year.

Integrated approach
MerAlliance focuses on the reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery of plastics.
In particular, we are implementing initiatives to encourage the recycling of plastics used in our industrial activities.
We are also deploying a specific action plan for the design of our packaging (see ‘Responsible packaging’ commitment).
