Sustainable agriculture

Global urgency
It is estimated that agricultural expansion is responsible for almost 90% of global deforestation, with soy and palm oil crops contributing 26% of total vegetation loss between 2001 and 2015.
Deforestation accelerates climate change by releasing huge quantities of CO₂ and reducing the capacity of forests to absorb this gas. It destroys entire ecosystems, threatening biodiversity, and disrupts water cycles, leading to droughts and floods.
Responsible agriculture and zero net deforestation are no longer options for protecting the planet.

Integrated approach
MerAlliance is fully committed to ensuring that its supply chain remains totally free from activities that contribute to deforestation or conversion, and is forging partnerships with farmers to feed salmon more responsibly.
In this context, soya, which currently accounts for around 20% of farmed salmon feed, is a major focus of attention.
Our goals
Partnership with farmers to feed salmon more responsibly:
100%
of the soya used to feed the fish does not come from deforestation (RTRS – Roundtable for Responsible Soy- or ProTerra certified soya).
